The Organization of Valuation and Devaluation
Final Report Abstract
The research project “The Organization of Valuation and Devaluation” deals with the organized evaluation of people by others. The project is dedicated to the question of what consequences the formal organizational context in evaluation procedures has with regard to those negotiation conflicts between the participants that arise due to pluralistic values. In other words, it sheds light on a factor that has tended to be neglected in previous research: The organizational environment. The empirical object of investigation is two types of selection procedures that operate with a high degree of uncertainty. Firstly, admission procedures at art colleges were observed ethnographically over a period of several months. These are faced with the decisionmaking problem of having to evaluate and select under the opaque sign of “artistic talent”, as well as the additional formal problem of having to accept a certain minimum number of applicants in order to utilize the university's capacities. Secondly, highly selective selection procedures for “talented” managers from listed companies were examined. These were not traditional assessment centers, but procedures that explicitly take into account normative concepts such as diversity and equal opportunities in addition to performance assessment.
