Closed cycle SQUID magnetometer

Subject Area Condensed Matter Physics
Term Funded in 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 439555515

Within the framework of three research groups and several projects (DFG, BMBF and EU), extensive work on magnetic materials in the form of thin films, nanoparticles and bulk will be carried out in the next few years. The focus is on their magnetic, electrical and thermal transport properties aiming at several applications: caloric effects, magnetic shape memory, nanoparticles for biomedical applications, giant and tunneling magneto resistive sensors, spincaloritronics, etc. For magnetic characterization, the working groups currently count only with a magnetometer designed for thin films, making measurements on larger samples difficult. Both the existing magnetometer and the transport properties measurement setups are overloaded. Therefore, it is extremely important that a new, highly sensitive magnetometer which is versatile enough to allow measurements in all the planned systems be added to our infrastructure. In particular, without this new magnetometer, the new group Magnetic Energy Materials cannot advance in its research since it deals chiefly with bulk samples. Moreover, the new requested system will allow for the characterization of magnetic and transport properties under the same conditions, a possibility that the research groups currently do not have and that will allow the connection between magnetic and transport phenomena.
