Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 441215516
The goal of the proposed project is to devise excellent polymer electrode materials and electrolytes for Al-, Ca- and Mg based battery systems that utilize the favorable properties of organic redox polymers as cathode-active materials and offer high volumetric and gravimetric energy densities and safety, combined with a small environmental footprint in production. We will develop environmentally more sustainable synthetic routes to organic redox polymers as positive electrode materials, which do not require stoichiometric amounts of transition metals, we will investigate high-capacity n-type redox polymers in Mg- and Ca-based batteries as well as p-type redox polymers in Al-, Mg- and Ca-based batteries. Fluorine-free electrolytes will be developed for Al- and Ca-based cells, and “anode-free” concepts explored for Mg- and Ca batteries, which do not require excess amounts of metal, among other objectives. Mechanistic experimental investigations will allow to gain understanding on the ion insertion processes in the polymer-based electrodes.
