This application for large-scale equipment for procurement of a computer tomograph is intended to strengthen the research focus "Innovative Materials and Materials Technologies" at University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück.Knowledge of the internal structures is often necessary to explain or predict the external (macroscopic) behaviour of the various materials. The internal properties are influenced on the one hand by the material(s) themselves and on the other hand by the manufacturing process. This internal structure is usually analyzed destructively, e.g. by microsections for microscopic examinations. A disadvantage here is the 2-dimensional image, since 3-dimensional information can only be generated locally limited with considerable additional effort by microsections at a defined distance. With a computer tomograph 3-dimensional informations can be determined non-destructively. The analyses can be used, for example, for quality assurance, for damage analysis or for measuring inaccessible detail geometries. This measuring technique is also attractive because not only qualitative observations of the volume images but also quantitative measurements (e.g. metrology, analysis of foam structures, determination of fiber orientation) are possible. The applied large-scale equipment will be used at the university for various investigations in the field of materials science:- Comparison of CAD data with real geometry and derivation of tool corrections- Creation of CAD data from scanned volumes- Metrology on components- Measurement of fiber orientation and fiber volume content of fiber-reinforced plastics- Determination of filler distributions and quantities for plastics- Damage analysis- Detection of defects (e.g. blowholes in cast components, delaminations in fibre composites)- Investigation of foam structures (metal / plastic)- Investigations at the interfaces of joining joints- Analysis of 3d-printed components (metal / plastic)- Generation of finite element meshes that allow structural mechanical simulations based on real geometry and microstructure. In order to meet these requirements, a system is to be procured with which detailed images can be generated both of larger components and of small test specimens. Furthermore this system has to be able to analyse different materials. Challenges here include the different densities of metals and plastics and the contrast in multi-material systems where the density of individual materials is in a similar range. The device applied for will significantly strengthen research at the University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück in the field of materials science and secures long-term and future-oriented research opportunities through the above-mentioned analysis options.
