Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis is one of the most important methods for determining the structure of crystalline compounds. Therefore, the equipment necessary for this kind of analysis is present in nearly every university. At the University of Kiel, this method is carried out at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry for all interested research groups, leading to a large number of common publications, not only in the Chemistry Department but also with other scientific institutions. The here proposed new single crystal X-ray diffractometer shall replace the old one, which in every aspect does not correspond to the state of the art. It is outdated, can be used only with restrictions and does not allow the performance of important scientific investigations. The new device will be equipped with micro focused tubes with Mo and Cu radiation, a sensitive detector, a state of the art software and will enable the performance of temperature dependent measurements in a larger temperature range. With this instrument, a large number of samples can be investigated, which is also not possible with the present device. This will also lead to new cooperation projects with colleagues in Kiel, whose scientific questions could not be addressed so far. Finally, the new instrument will allow students in chemistry and other disciplines to become familiar with the most modern technology in this area.
