Tailor-made, adjustable photonic crystals and glasses are to be produced by atomic layer deposition. First, spherical and cylindrical nanostructures will be coated with a defined sequence of isotropic oxide layers in order to generate an effective radial anisotropic refractive index of the elementary base unit and thus precisely adjust the scattering properties of the photonic structures. Second, metal-insulator phase transition materials will be used for the coating of pre-assembled photonic structures. These materials allow for a (controllable) temperature-dependent switching of the optical properties of the photonic structures.
