Cataloguing of the Literary Estate of Josef Guggenmos
Final Report Abstract
The goal of the project was the detailed classification and cataloging of Josef Guggenmos' literary estate. Furthermore, the material was archived in the depot of the International Youth Library. The indexing took place with the help of the aDIS database in the Kalliope autograph portal. The RNAB (resource development with authority data in archives and libraries) rules were applied. Josef Guggenmos (1922–2003) is one of the most successful and important poets of the second half of the 20th century. He is particularly known for his nature and animal poems for children, but also wrote for adults, such as the volume of poetry “Gugummer geht über den See” (Gugummer goes over the lake), published in 1957. He published his first texts as a young adult. He achieved financial independence as a writer after his success with “Was denkt die Maus am Donnerstag?” (What Does the Mouse Think on Thursday?), for which he received the German Youth Literature Prize in 1968. To this day, his books and texts are being republished and can be found in many school textbooks. In addition to manuscripts of his works (poems, prose, radio plays), the Guggenmos estate includes a large volume of letters and correspondence. It is an important addition to the network of correspondents in numerous 20th century estates. Josef Guggenmos was in correspondence with numerous authors and other cultural figures, sometimes for decades. among others with his publisher Hans-Joachim Gelberg (Beltz & Gelberg). Diaries, work indexes and work notes provide insights into Guggenmos' everyday life, his way of thinking and working as well as how he created his work. The overarching goal of the project was to make the estate accessible for scientific research and for an interested public. The estate can be researched online and viewed in the reading room of the International Youth Library.
