The focus of the planned network group, which is to be composed of representatives of the primarily historically working disciplines of Ancient Oriental Studies, the Old and New Testaments, as well as the history of the Ancient Church, Classical Archaeology, Byzantine Studies, Arabic Studies and Medieval Studies, is on the figure of the pre-modern ruler. The focus of the research is not on the typical or ideological aspects of rule, but on the individual ruler, who is to be described primarily in situations of confrontation with challenges or questioning of his rule. Thus, the planned group is located in the field of comparative research on rulers and monarchy, but at the same time offers a disciplinary composition and thematic focus and concretization that is not represented in the current research landscape.
