Designing Ambient Intelligence Applications for Smart Office Environments: An Empirical Cross-Cultural Study Analyzing the Requirements for Ambient Intelligence Applications in Work Environments

Subject Area Image and Language Processing, Computer Graphics and Visualisation, Human Computer Interaction, Ubiquitous and Wearable Computing
Term from 2007 to 2010
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 44586519

Smart Office Environments are on the threshold of becoming everyday reality. The design of these environments will have a considerable impact on the way people work and interact in the future. In order to build trusted systems, it is important to identify the requirements that potential users of such intelligent offices have. As detailed and holistic user studies are timeconsuming and cost-intensive, the requirement analyses done so far were mostly applicationspecific or explored only singular aspects of an anticipate system. As a result, the insights gained in these evaluations, have only limited validity when it comes to the design of new Ambient Intelligence applications. The goal of this research work is to understand the desires as well as fears of potential users, regarding the implementation of Ambient Intelligence technologies in work environments. Based on this knowledge, it is aimed to define a set of comprehensive and application-independent design guidelines for intelligent office applications, in order to avoid recurring requirements analyses prior to each design process. These guidelines will help researchers as well as system developers to design and implement user-friendly applications, and thereby also contribute to the acceptance of Ambient Intelligence in future work environments.
