The gene cluster of a non-ribosomally synthesized peptide from a bacterium of the phylum proteobacteria is investigated by gene inactivation mutagenesis and in-vitro reconstitution of the biosynthesis. Additionally, a synthetic approach to the peptide will be elaborated, which will concomitantly provide access to enzyme substrates. With the investigation of the gene cluster we pursue to obtain insights into a new type of non-ribosomal peptide synthesis as well as preliminary insights into structure-activity-relations.
