The Clinical Research Department of the Clinic for Pediatrics and Youth Medicine of the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus at the TU Dresden is applying for the replacement of a flow cytometer, as the technical support for the existing device will be discontinued shortly. The scientists are mainly concentrating on immunological questions concerning defects of the innate immune system. The focus is on pathomechanisms of autoinflammation and autoimmunity. Disorders of inflammasome formation as well as type 1 interferon signaling pathways form the clinical basis for numerous research projects. Their aim is not only to gain a better understanding of the pathogenesis of these diseases but also to develop new therapeutic options. Starting from hematopoietic stem cells, all cells of the immune system in the individual differentiation and maturation stages can play a role. For these research projects, the characterization of cell populations in the context of immune system activation is of outstanding importance. This characterization can only be carried out so efficiently with the help of flow cytometry that even small blood volumes, which are often only available in pediatrics, are sufficient. Thus, primary cell populations can be identified and their activation status can be recorded precisely. Flow cytometry is also of enormous importance in the analysis of cell culture and animal model systems and is essential for the implementation of the current research projects.
