Local but interconnected circuits in visual, parietal and prefrontal cortex provide the neural resources for primates to compute perceptual decisions. Combining theoretical and empirical approaches, we probe - neuron to behaviour - resource allocation by functional connectivity (FC) changes in macaques. We alter frontoparietal FC with focused ultrasound. Neural mechanisms are inferred by network models of monkeys’ own connectivity data and validated against empirical counterparts. We predict FC interventions to adjust the correlation structure of neural population encoding and thus alter resource allocation and cognitive performance.
