Search for new hadrons and study of hadron spectroscopy at BESIII and PANDA

This project is tailored to enable two groups, one from Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) in Beijing (China) and the other from the Ruhr-University Bochum (RUB, Germany) to work together in the field of hadron physics. The BESIII experiment is currently one of the most successful experiments in the field of hadron physics. Its results like the careful investigation of newly, completely unexpected particles pave the way for a much deeper understanding of the strong interaction.The coming years with an additional upgrade of energy and luminosity can rightfully be expected to be extremely fruitful in terms of results. This is a continuation of the FG2359 which ends in 2021 with a new scope of the program taking advantage of the newly achievable data sets. At the same time, not all questions posed by new results or the non-perturbative part of the strong interaction can be answered conclusively. This is the point where the new PANDA experiment at the FAIR facility in Germany will pick up in a few years from now. PANDA will study the antiproton-proton annihilation process compared to the electron-positron annihilation at BESIII. The Bochum group received only funding from BMBF for the construction of hardware for PANDA but not for the preparation of physics. Since each of the production processes of particles have their individual advantages and disadvantages, their combination is an ideal case. We plan in the next years to take data sets at BESIII to study so-called QCD exotics which are present due to the specific unique features of the strong interaction. The presence of the highly respected IHEP group and Chinese universities together with the international partner at RUB will be a key in making this a success. The presence of the IHEP group directly at the experiment assures a continuous first-hand flow of results and information among the partners, allowing for a most effective data-taking plan and speedy high-quality analysis. The long-standing expertise of the RUB group in hadron physics in different experiments over the past 30 years complements this nicely. Existing analysis packages like the partial-wave analysis package PAWIAN at RUB will be used to analyze commonly the data and being further developed for a future use at PANDA. Techniques, like an efficient energy reconstruction of electromagnetic particles in a calorimeter, developed and tested at BESIII will be transferred and utilized at PANDA. The RUB group is one of the key groups for the hardware construction of the PANDA electromagnetic calorimeter and the IHEP group is a strong partner in the development of offline software and the readout of the PANDA-EMC, again creating necessary fruitful synergies. The PIs, Prof. Xiaoyan Shen and Prof. Ulrich Wiedner have a long-standing track record from several leading experiments in hadron physics and two key participants in the project had already worked successfully together as conveners of the light hadron group in BESIII.
