Reform "from above"? The Development of State Women's Policy in the Federal Republic of Germany in the 1960s and 1970s

Subject Area Modern and Contemporary History
Term since 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 449569157

Since the 1960s, the living situation of women has become the subject of discussion in state institutions in the Federal Republic of Germany. The resulting state women's policy has often been viewed in relation to the New Women's Movement. This project focuses on independent institutional developments by specifically investigating women's policy debates and state projects at the federal and state level, using the example of Hamburg. In particular, the following questions will be addressed: What arguments and actors have shaped the debates on women's policy? Which significant turning points can be found? To what extent did the New Women's Movement and international political developments play a role? The reconstruction of institutional contexts of women's politics as well as the related negotiation processes and debates are designed as a contribution to the cultural history of politics and the history of the Federal Republic of Germany in the 1960s and 1970s.
