Depression is the most frequent mental disorders after stroke, with about one in three stroke patients affected by it. Depressed stroke patients suffer from worse recovery, lower quality of life, higher mortality and more frequent re-infarcts compared to stroke patietns without depression. Despite these well-known negative consequences there is a problem of under-diagnosis and under-treatment for post stroke depression. The evidence base concerning psychotherapy for post stroke depression ist equivocal due to the substantial heterogeneity of previous study designs, contents and timing of interventions. The current Trial aims to evaluatue the feasibility of a manualized, outpatient short term therapy for post stroke depression. Depressed stroke patients will be randomized into an intervention group (integrative-interpersonal therapy) or a control group (enhanced treatment as usual) after discharge from inpatient rehabilitation. Changes in depressive symptoms, level of functioning, and well-known risk factors will be assessed for a period of 12 months after stroke. The feasibility study is planned as a first step to examine the feasibility of recruitment and the practicability and usability of the newly adpated intervention. In addition, a first estimation of an expected effect and its variance will be generated to enable a sample size estimation for a subsequent confirmatory clinical trial. Aim of the current study is a test of the feasibility of an integrativ-interpersonal therapy for post stroke depression as well as its evaluation in a subsequent confirmatory trial.
