Test laboratory low calorific heat 4.0 with an ORC system for sector coupling

Subject Area Fluid Mechanics, Technical Thermodynamics and Thermal Energy Engineering
Term from 2021 to 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 451955550

The existing heating and cooling circuit with the heat storage tanks, heat exchangers and pumps as well as cooling systems contained therein was put into operation in 1995 with the creation of the complex laboratory. Since then, the system has been repeatedly adapted and expanded to meet the requirements of laboratory operation with manageable resources. With the applied for test laboratory Low Calorific Heat 4.0 - ORC-System for Sector Coupling, the thermo-technical systems and cooling plant are to be supplemented by an ORC test plant and a heat layer storage in order to connect the heat side of the complex laboratory with the electrical side and to convert previously unused low-temperature waste heat into electricity. With the implementation and demonstration of the Organic Rankine Cycle process, the IRES working group will have the opportunity to work on current topics of sector coupling in the research area and study operation, to expand existing competencies together with industrial partners and to carry out innovative research projects in an otherwise economically underdeveloped region.
