We apply for a joint data storage system for the high-energy physics and CryoEM groups at the University of Regensburg. For the former group, the benefit of the requested system is partly the further processing on local specialized clusters at the University of Regensburg of 7 PB of data, generated in the USA on leadership-class supercomputers. The cost associated with re-generating this data is several million EUR. This data serves precision calculations for the standard model of particle physics. In addition, the high-energy physics group needs a data archive for additional re-usable data for current and future research projects.Furthermore, the University of Regensburg is currently installing a new CryoEM system, which is configured efficiently and will generate over the next years a large amount of data (several TB/day). We intend to support the efficient use of this system by the requested efficient and reliable data storage system. For this reason, we intend to create a centralized but individualized data storage and backup/archive system for all types of data. The data generated by the CryoEM will be shared with other working groups at the institute and cross-institutional cooperative entities. The time-resolved CryoEM is an important component of the Strukturentwicklungsplan of the University of Regensburg and is one of the main components of the new cross-institutional RUN (Regensburg Center for Nanoscopy).The required classes of hardware are identical for the high-energy physics and CryoEM applications, leading to a substantial synergy through the joint acquisition and operation of the system.
