Commission Modified Bone & Shell of the International Union of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Sciences (UISPP) – Bâtons perçés (Volume XVI)
Final Report Abstract
Between December 2020 and February 2023, the participants of the scientific network Modified Bone & Shell of the International Union of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Sciences (UISPP) – Bâtons perçés (Band XVI) met several times. This happened via Zoom and in personal meetings. In October 2021, the archaeological experiments on the possible use of the perforated items, which had been preceded by intensive planning, were implemented. In November/December 2021, February/March 2022 and in February 2023, a week-long working meeting was held for the purpose of digitally documenting the bâtons percés in the Musée national de Préhistoire in France. They were photographed and 3D scanned. In addition, a first technological analysis of the artifacts was carried out. Artefacts in south-west German museums were documented in the same way. In April 2022, the planned international workshop took place at Castle Hohentübingen. 12 members of the funded network took part. In the meantime, two members were no longer able to participate and two other members followed. The invited guests also came to Tübingen in person. Here, the participants of the network exchanged in-depth information about the topic and the various bâtons percés from European sites, their meanings and possible functions. The results of the working meetings, the documentation of the largest corpus of these artefacts ever recorded, and the knowledge from the workshop will be published in a publication by the Tübinger University Press in 2025. This publication will be open access so that the work of the DFG-funded network will be made visible worldwide.
