GoeGRID computer custer extension

Term Funded in 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 456104544

The existing GoeGRID cluster will be extended to provide computing power for the Schumann group (Theoretical Particle Physics), which recently joined the Institute for Theoretical Physics of University of Göttingen, and for the growing needs of the theoretical physics research groups. For economical reasons an extension of the existing GoeGRID cluster is preferred over the acquisition of a separate new system. The joint use by several working groups will guarantee an optimal degree of capacity utilisation. The extension should fit in without changing the existing architecture and software, so that the operation of the cluster can continue as usual and without interruption. The Schumann group is active in the development of the Monte Carlo event generator SHERPA, specializing in the simulation of scattering events at the Large Hadron Collider. The group investigates phenomenological questions and develops innovative numerical simulation tools. As part of this project a dedicated benchmark and validation framework for the SHERPA generator will be developed and implemented.
