Project Details
Formation of structured neural circuits in hydra and computational models (A04)
Subject Area
Cognitive, Systems and Behavioural Neurobiology
Term
since 2021
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 434434223
The project A4 strives to uncover fundamental principles of neuronal network topology and activity by combining experimentation on the freshwater polyp Hydra with computational modeling. Using transgenic polyps, we will generate structural, activity, and behavioral maps of an adult Hydra nervous system. The empirical data will be used to develop computational models of the network topology and its activity dynamics and explore basic developmental and plasticity rules that shape specific network architectures. Beyond insights into functional principles of biological nervous systems, the project aims to yield guiding design principles for the development of neuromorphic electronic circuits.
