Surface spectroscopy laboratory

Subject Area Construction Engineering and Architecture
Term Funded in 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 457309087

Within the proposal at hand, two closely coordinated and complementary measuring facilities (micromechanical station and surface spectroscopy station) including the necessary accessory instruments are applied for. The overall goal of the current and future research with these instruments is to investigate the mechanical properties of mineral phases which constitute hardened cement phases (including degradation effects e.g. resulting from durability attack) or other minerals, to correlate these mechanical properties with the mineral composition of those phases and to investigate the influence of environmental changes on the behavior of the overall system. In dialogue with DFG, the necessary instruments for these investigations are applied for in two separate proposals, i.e. a proposal for a micromechanical station (consisting of a nanoindenter, microindenter and scratch-tool measurement head all installed in a climate chamber, plus an mercury intrusion porosimeter as accessory tool to be installed in a fume hood) and a surface spectroscopy station (consisting of a confocal Raman microscope with AFM module and various surface preparation techniques as accessory). This combination of techniques will allow for a much more detailed insight into the microstructure of building materials. The applied instruments will provide a significant extension of the predominantly meso- and macroscopic research at IfB.
