Final Report Abstract

This research-project dealt with the question whether the idea of a philosophical value theory might be justified. Instead of limiting the discussion on philosophical objections and counterarguments, it took also the interdisciplinary research on value-phenomena into account. It has been carried out that a philosophical value-theory can offer a helpful perspective for the articulation of various phenomena like sacredness, cultural heritage and social engagement discussed in social sciences, religious or heritage studies elaborating a conceptual framework for the distinction of different kinds of values, the difference between values and goods and including a notion of historical change and cultural diversity. It can also offer a critical perspective on central presuppositions of empirical value-surveys. Then, it has been carried out that the most important philosophical objection concerns the relation of a universalist notion of value and the insight of historical change. This fundamental problem might be addressed by including a notion of sociocultural mediation of value-experience. Other objections seem to be rather limited to certain (naturalist or rationalist) selfunderstanding of philosophy or to a strong notion of moral values. Eventually, a philosophical value-theory might be promising in virtue of focusing on the articulation of concrete phenomena instead of talking about ‘the values’ in a general way.
