Digitisation and Indexing of Printed Material Published in the 18th Century in the German-Speaking Areas (VD 18)
Final Report Abstract
The project "Verzeichnis der im deutschen Sprachraum erschienenen Drucke des 18. Jahrhunderts" (VD 18) aims to record and index all printed works published in German or in the German-speaking area from 1701 to 1800. In doing so, the corresponding works are not only cataloged, but also completely digitized and made accessible online. The now completed project concludes the projects that have been running at the SUB Göttingen since the end of 2009. The project was carried out as described in the project application. The three steps of cataloging, digitization and structural data creation had been sufficiently tested, so that no deviations or corrections had to be made. In the course of the fourth section of the main phase of the VD18 project, a total of 2,568 monographs and multi-volume works were cataloged and digitized at the SUB Göttingen. In the process, 34,382 structural elements were assigned. In total, the VD18 projects at the SUB Göttingen, together with the approximately 7,000 volumes digitized by Google at the BSB Munich in project phase 3, have now prepared 45,898 volumes for the VD18. With the completion of the fourth project phase, the SUB Göttingen has now considered all VD18- relevant titles available in Göttingen. It would be desirable to create an evaluation of all titles processed at the SUB with regard to genres, printing places and years, and authors against the background of all titles processed so far in all VD18 libraries. However, since the evaluation must cover almost 290,000 processed prints (=monographs, volumes of multi-volume works and periodical volumes), this can unfortunately not be done within the framework of this project. It would be desirable if a separate research project were to be dedicated to this task in the near future - preferably even in direct comparison with the data of the predecessor projects VD 16 and VD 17.
