Measuring system for flows and thermal comfort indoors

Subject Area Construction Engineering and Architecture
Term Funded in 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 460580014

Airflows have a large impact on various building physics problems. In addition to human requirements concerning hygiene and thermal comfort, especially thermal and moisture protection are strongly influenced by indoor air currents. To understand the airflow conditions in detail simulation calculations have to be combined with comprehensive experimental investigations. The Major Research Instrument applied for shall help to obtain significant contributions in the field of indoor airflows and thermal comfort. The instrument enables the visualisation of airflows and to quantitatively measure the flow velocity, flow directions and temperature as well as illustrate density gradients. In combination with the existing climate chamber scientifically reproducible experimental examinations can be executed. Furthermore, the Major Research Instrument would support work on current research projects and would be an asset to future research proposals. Since the applicants have the spatial conditions and basic building physics measuring equipment available in their research laboratories the Major Research Instrument applied for here can create a high technical equipment benefit for research. Finally, the applicant is convinced that his many years of experience in the field of building physics in combination with the Major Research Instrument will provide important impulses and contributions to current and future research activities.
