Structured light stereo scanner

Subject Area Construction Engineering and Architecture
Term Funded in 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 461109100

The equipment is a high-precision surveying device for the point-based and area-based acquisition of objects in outdoor and indoor environments. The requirement is to obtain highly detailed surface and image information using a structured light scanner. The system and its components are used for basic research in the fields of engineering geodesy, photogrammetry, civil engineering and mechanical engineering. It is used for surface inspection of components of different sizes, for sensor control and for addressing research questions in the context of materials research. The equipment, as well as its components, is characterized by the fact that the obtained geometric information, as well as the images, can be transformed into the given object coordinate system at any time and any place of a construction site (or a production hall, or a large building), in order to establish a reference to a superordinate model or reference frame. In addition, this transformation should be doable without physical markers in order to guarantee a fully automated and contact-less workflow. In order to fulfill the outlined tasks, it is necessary to purchase, besides the structured light scanner (SLS) as the main device, further high-precision and modern surveying equipment: a robot totalstation of the latest generation is to be used to orient the SLS in space, whereby GNSS receivers are necessary to position the totalstation in the reference frame. Furthermore, a terrestrial laser scanner will be used to reliably link individual SLS measurements. Furthermore, it is necessary to use software that connects the individual components independently of manufacturers and stores data centrally. In the attached documents, scientists from 4 German universities describe how they will use the equipment for their respective research questions (in existing projects), or outline plans for future work. The research supplement forms are prepared for four research groups according to the research directions and questions:Working group 1 is concerned with the development of basic procedures for linking the SLS with the other components, i.e. to ensure the above-mentioned co-registration of the individual acquisitions.Working group 2 deals with questions concerning the quality control of produced surfaces, mainly in the field of additive manufacturing in building construction.Working group 3 uses the large-scale equipment and components for the simulation and verification of models for various problems in materials science.Working group 4 deals with the positioning of robots and sensors in object space. Here, the equipment is used indirectly by providing highly accurate environment geometry, but also the totalstation is used to directly position the mobile devices in space.
