Porduction and investigation of graded porous metals by rolling in a time-varying rolling gap

Subject Area Metallurgical, Thermal and Thermomechanical Treatment of Materials
Term from 2021 to 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 461192918

As the applicant's prior work has shown, rolling with a time-varying rolling gap offers the possibility of providing porous metals with a specifically adjusted structure and property gradient. However, the mechanisms by which the structure of the porous metal changes during rolling in the time-varying roll gap have not yet been investigated. Therefore, in this research project, the correlation between rolling process parameters and resulting material structure is to be elucidated so that the potential of porous metals produced by rolling in the time-varying gap can be raised. Although the investigations are to be carried out on the example of porous aluminum, produced by infiltration of a salt bed, it can be assumed that significant findings are transferable to other porous metals. Essential elements of the proposed investigation program are rolling trials with a time-constant and variable rolling gap in conjunction with computer tomographic reconstructions of the resulting structure and finite element simulations of the processes in the rolling gap, using a continuum model as well as a pore-resolved model.
