Luminescence spectrometer

Subject Area Molecular Chemistry
Term Funded in 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 461842662

With the requested instrumentation, the applicants will characterize discrete luminescent complexes and molecules or ensembles thereof in fluid and frozen solutions, solids and films. Samples will be investigated at variable temperatures down to 77 K to suppress vibrational relaxation, geometric distortion and thermally activated surface crossing and to study thermal equilibration of close-lying excited states, in particular spin-flip states, and thermally-activated delayed fluorescence processes. Besides photoluminescence spectra, (absolute) luminescence quantum yields and excited state lifetimes of novel luminophores, we will also determine time-resolved decays in the absence and presence of potential quenchers and substrates for the advancement of photochemical reactions with transition metal complexes and organic photocatalysts (intensity and lifetime-based Stern-Volmer analyses). High spectral resolution and broad excitation and detection ranges (UV/Vis/NIR) will be combined with high temporal resolution (from sub-ns to seconds) to cover all diverse investigated systems of the applicants.
