Mid-infrared frequency comb generation in passive III-V waveguides on InP platform
Final Report Abstract
The goal of the project was to conduct a comprehensive theoretical and experimental investigation of InP-based waveguiding platform to be used for mid-infrared (mid-IR, λ = 3– 12 µm) Kerr frequency comb generation in micro-ring resonators. The project comprises of several key components: a theoretical investigation and optimization of the group velocity dispersion in these material systems; experimental development and refinement of fabrication processes to produce high-quality micro-ring resonator structures; characterization and minimization of optical losses in the resulting waveguides; experimental measurement of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility; and ultimately, determination of the frequency comb generation threshold power and experimental demonstration of Kerr frequency combs. This project is expected to result in compact, modular, high quality ring resonators on an InP platform capable of Kerr frequency comb generation spanning the entire mid-IR spectral range on a material system seamlessly compatible with the predominant mid-IR light source, the quantum cascade laser (QCL).
