Subproject B04 will develop a stimulus-responsive, implant-associated reaction system, which enables targeted, localized drug release when activated by the practitioner upon clinical signs of infection. To achieve this, a novel implant design will be realized, incorporating a switchable, miniaturized electromagnetic pumping unit for on-demand localized drug delivery via a biocompatible porous channel coating that covers the entire implant surface. Simultaneously, to ensure the required mechanical strength, ultra-fine-grained niobium-zirconium-based materials will be developed, utilizing a controlled internal oxidation process for material strengthening.
