In subproject B05, a stimulus-triggered sequential drug release system for osseointegrated implants will be developed. The initial release of antibacterial agents will be autonomously triggered by the lowered pH during an occurring infection. Once the infection has subsided, bone regeneration will be stimulated by the delayed autonomous release of regeneration-promoting agents. Sequential release will be achieved by either a degradable layer-by-layer coating or a responsive coating over an active ingredient reservoir. To follow the regenerative processes activated by the sequential drug release system, an in vivo observation chamber model will simultaneously be developed.
