DWV infections are considered to be a major cause of honey bee colony collapse. The current DWV strains are supposed to have evolved from apathogenic precursors. The aim of our studies is to decipher the molecular determinants of this emerging virulence. To achieve this goal, we will (I) systematically exchange genes between avirulent and virulent strains, (II) analyze genetic variations and selection of traits after passage in bee pupae, and (III) investigate the functions of the viral leader protein as an RNAi antagonist. The results of the study will provide new insights into the virulence factors of DWV and expand the general knowledge about the current DWV epidemic in honey bees.
