Radiative effects of convective ice clouds in the UTLS from satellite observations (SAT-ICE) (A02)

In this project we will study convection since it controls the water and radiation budget in the UTLS in a decisive way through the transport of water and water vapour from the boundary layer. We will use geostationary spaceborne observa-tions of convective ice cloud properties combined with a cloud tracking algorithm to study the temporal evolution of anvil cirrus properties - including microphysics - and of their radiative effect throughout the life cycle. Satellite observations will be complemented with in situ measurements and with model simulations from other projects.
