Project Details
Aerosol nucleation in the upper troposphere (A03)
Subject Area
Atmospheric Science
Term
since 2021
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 428312742
The project will investigate new particle formation processes in the extratropical UTLS region. We intend to measure the key precursor gases of aerosol nucleation and initial particle growth by flying a new CI-APiTOF mass spectrometer onboard HALO. The measurements will be conducted as part of the HALO mission CONTANGO-FIRE which will take place in central Argentina in January/February 2028 as a central part of the 2nd phase of TP-Change. The involvement of precursors such as isoprene organonitrates, sulfuric acid, and ammonia at the molecular scale. The measurements are complemented by model simulations to investigate the vertical transport mechanisms, turbulent mixing processes, chemical reactions in the gas and aqueous phase, as well as aerosol chemical and microphysical processing.
