The distribution of radiatively active substances impacts the current climate state and future changes thereof, but the complex interplay of controlling processes ranging from the global to the microscale is poorly understood. In the project we aim to identify leading order modes of water vapor and aerosol variability at the (sub-)synoptic-scale from observational data. The physical processes that control the emergence of these modes of variability are explored with the high-resolution model experiments and advanced Lagrangian diagnostics. Finally, modelled fingerprints of control processes in the multi-constituent will be combined with detailed observational data to corroborate model hypothesis on the emergence of the UTLS structure and to develop constraints on the model.
