Mass spectrometry is a cross-sectional technology that plays a key role in chemical, biochemical and molecular biological research and teaching. Representatives of the Institute of Chemistry (IfC) and the Institute of Biochemistry and Biology (IBB) of the University of Potsdam have joined forces and combined the urgently needed replacements and a new acquisition of individual mass spectrometry instruments with the establishment of a cross-institute MS analytics center. Our aim is to strengthen synergy effects and to share and expand analytical expertise at the University of Potsdam. Further, we intend to coordinate the use of various analytical techniques, to enhance the overall capacity and to prevent repair bottlenecks. As part of a package proposal, we apply for a MALDI-MSMS instrument into which samples are applied in crystalline matrix (replacement proposal/applicant Joerg Fettke) in order to meet the significantly increased sample volume in the newly established Centre for Natural Product Genomics at the University of Potsdam and the increased demand for mass spectrometry at the IfC and IBB. As part of the package proposal, the following additional equipment is also requested: 1) a GC-MSMS instrument for the analysis of small, volatile molecules (replacement proposal/applicant Heiko Möller); 2) an LC-ESI-IMS-MSMS instrument for dissolved samples (replacement proposal and expansion to include the previously missing ion mobility spectrometry/applicant Heiko Möller) and 3) an LC-ESI-Orbitrap-MSMS instrument (new proposal/applicant Elke Dittmann).Numerous groups from both institutes will benefit from higher performance and versatility of the instruments (including IMS and ultra-high resolution) as well as the significantly increased sample capacity and will be able to advance internationally competitive research projects.
