SQUID-Magnetometer optimized for u-channel samples

This proposal requests funding for acquisition of a superconducting rock magnetometer system optimized for u-channel samples at the University of Greifswald. Such an instrument is vital for the research programmes of the applicant and will be a prerequisite to attract third party funding in future. The instrument will serve as a centrepiece in the Physical Geography department and will also be a key to derive paleomagnetic and environmental magnetic information in already funded projects such as the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) Project NamCore (The Nam Co Drilling Project, Tibet), which has an outstanding international visibility and is scheduled for 2023, in which the applicant of this proposal is the lead PI. Direct access to this system will spur international collaborations and will also give the University of Greifswald and Germany great visibility. The acquisition of this instrument is a natural extension of research being undertaken at the University of Greifswald, both at present and into the future, and will see heavy use by both the PI and the broader community.Using the magnetometer, both paleomagnetic and environmental magnetic investigations will be carried out. Paleomagnetic investigations will not only contribute to a better understanding of the earth's magnetic field in time and space, but paleomagnetic secular variations are frequently used in the applicant's working group to corroborate chronologies or even date sedimentary sequences. Environmental magnetic investigations complement chemical methods available in Greifswald in order to enhance the quality of paleoenvironmental reconstructions.
