Operation of two Doppler on Wheels (DOW) mobile X-band radars during COPS

Subject Area Atmospheric Science
Term from 2007 to 2008
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 48411345

Final Report Year 2009

Final Report Abstract

For the first time in Germany, two DOWs were successfully deployed and operated. During the international field campaign COPS, the DOWs supported measurements within 12 IOPs which partly continued during several days. The DOWs provided a high quality data set concerning the low-level wind and precipitation fields in complex terrain. A tremendous effort was spent on the analysis and visualization of the data. For instance, dual Doppler retrieval algorithms were refined and applied at NCAR. At IPM, new tools for the integration and visualization of different data sets and model outputs were developed. The analyses of the DOW data in combination with other observations were exemplarily discussed using results achieved during IOP11b on July 26, 2007. It is possible to overlay DOW LOS and dual Doppler data with surface observations, MSG brightness temperature fields and their combinations, as well as GPS IWV among other observations. A far as the range of the DOW extended to the supersites, the dynamic information of the DOWs can be used to determine water vapor transport and variability in the CBL.
