Post-classical Greek

Subject Area Applied Linguistics, Computational Linguistics
Greek and Latin Philology
Term since 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 490615566

Greek is one of the few languages in the world with an uninterrupted written tradition that spans more than three thousand years. Nearly all periods of Greek are well-documented by large amounts of heterogeneous sources, literary texts, inscriptions, papyri, etc. Despite this, the attention scholarly research has devoted to the different phases of the Greek language is very uneven. While the pre-classical and classical periods of Greek have been studied for centuries, post-classical Greek, i.e. Greek from the Hellenistic age onward, has been focussed on only recently, albeit with a growing body of research. The purpose of the network is to create a forum for the scientific community of scholars working on post-classical Greek, promote linguistic approaches to studies on Greek, especially at German universities, and develop an interdisciplinary exchange between the various fields of linguistics and philology both at the German as well as at the international academic level. We propose a total of eight meetings discussing specific research topics and including up to three keynote speeches given by network members and invited speakers. The network is intended to be a catalyst for the establishment of a regular conference series on post-classical Greek in a two-year cycle including the publication of the conference proceedings.
