Photonic Quantum Reservoir Computing

Subject Area Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
Term since 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 490955321

The overarching goal of the PhotonicQRC project is to realize photonic quantum reservoir computing (QRC) operating as a fully functional next-generation neural network (NN) computing system exploiting quantum physics. Leveraging advantages unique to photonics enables the scalable parallelism essential to implement network-based computing, while quantum hardware brings exponential dimensionality of a Hilbert space to NNs. PhotonicQRC will strengthen the role of France and Germany on the global landscape in novel quantum computing by (1) developing quantum NN architectures optimized for photonic hardware, (2) establishing a fundamental understanding of QRC prospects and limitations based on extensive theoretical investigations that take imperfections of the photonic hardware platforms into account, (3) extending quantum computing (QC) hardware by demonstrating the uniquely hardware-friendly concept of reservoir computing (RC) in a novel quantum context, and (4) introducing benchmark evaluations and tests to demonstrating quantum advantage for RC. The impact of our interdisciplinary project will therefore go far beyond the QC and NN communities.
