As one oft he initial signatories of the 2003 Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities, the Helmholtz Association promotes and supports the implementation of Open Access. At the latest with the publication of the Helmholtz Open Access Policy of 2016, all institutions of the Helmholtz Association have been given guidance how to promote and implement Open Access. The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research GmbH - UFZ has already taken several steps towards promoting Open Access, for example with the establishment of Open Access publication funding by the library, a process for monitoring publication costs or an extensive range of consulting services. In order to meet the rapidly progressing transformation towards Open Access, the resulting increasing publication volume and the establishment and optimization of associated workflows, participation in the "Open Access Publication Costs" funding program is being intended. A central overview of publication fees in general and a more comprehensive coverage of costs for eligible publications are aimed at further strengthening open access to scientific literature. All these measures are also adopted to accomplish the aim of 100% open access quota for publications of the publication year 2025 formulated in the Helmholtz Association's Open Access Policy.
