Opened in 1975, the University of Bayreuth covers a wide range of subjects with its seven faculties, from law and economics to linguistics, literature and cultural studies to natural sciences and engineering. Newest addition is the highly interdisciplinary Faculty of Life Sciences: Food, Nutrition and Health in Kulmbach. Bayreuth University Library has had an Open Access Publication Fund for gold open access articles since 2012. In fall 2021, the Open Access Monograph Fund was established, providing funding for open access books. In addition to this financial support for Bayreuth researchers, a comprehensive range of services in the field of open access publishing has been developed over the last twelve years. In 2019, a dedicated Open Access team was established at the University Library in order to address both the vital importance of Open Access for the University of Bayreuth as well as the growing requirements in the areas of consulting, monitoring and invoice processing. Recently, the growing number of transformative agreements and the associated multitude of cost allocation and billing models, as well as the introduction of a virtual information budget, have placed increasingly complex demands on monitoring and on communicating the associated innovations to researchers and science-supporting staff. The University of Bayreuth is meeting these challenges through structure-building measures and an intensified exchange between all university stakeholders involved – both at a strategic-administrative level and through a continuous dialog with researchers.
