Project identifier

A high-energy laser system providing pulse energies of ~10 J in pulse durations of ~10 ns at repetition rates of > 1 Hz will be procured and installed at the Institute of Physics of University of Rostock to create dynamic compression pressures of ~100 GPa in the laboratory. This will allow for developing and testing novel dynamic compression sample environments for experiments at large-scale user facilities such as European XFEL to investigate structural transitions and chemical reactions at planetary interior conditions. In addition, the laser system will be used to systematically explore the release physics of interesting material structures created at extreme pressure and temperature environments to potentially remain metastable at ambient conditions. A particularly interesting example is the controlled generation of diamond nanoparticles with specific colour centres and sizes well below 10 nm.
