The World Heat Flow Portal (WHFP) project aims to modernize and enhance the global research data infrastructure (RDI) for terrestrial and marine heat-flow data. Building on the RDI developed during the World Heat Flow Database Project (WHDB), the WHFP enriches a century of heat-flow data with up-to-date metadata, ensuring they are well-documented, quality-controlled, and compliant with FAIR and open data principles. The project focuses on improving and expanding the existing RDI and web-based data portal to provide efficient access and advanced analytical tools for the geoscientific community. Key objectives include the transition to a semi-automated data publication process, to develop advanced analytical tools, to increase the RDI resilience, and enhance both front-end and back-end functionalities. The project also emphasizes global, community-driven data and metadata enrichment, with a new focus on marine data for which new reporting protocols and quality schemes are being developed with the community. The WHFP is led by the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, the Technical University of Dresden, and MARUM, with support from international organizations such as the International Heat Flow Commission (IHFC) and the International Lithosphere Program (ILP). During its duration, the WHFP aims to transform the existing prototype into a comprehensive, fully functional platform for heat-flow research, which will be maintained as a permanent service by GFZ.
