Synthesis and Spectroscopy of Reduced Bis(imino)pyridine Iron Catalysts

Homogeneous catalysis has revolutionized chemical synthesis. This art typically requires toxic and expensive precious metals such as rhodium and palladium. Chirik’s laboratory has been actively engaged in developing soluble iron compounds to serve as precious metal surrogates in catalytic hydrogenation, hydrosilylation and cycloaddition reactions. Key to the function of first generation bis(imino)pyridine iron catalysts is the electronic structure of the metal. Unlike second and third row transition metals, iron presents the opportunity for a range of oxidation states and one electron changes. Wieghardt’s expertise in ligand centered radical chemistry and state-of-the-art spectroscopic and computational facilities beautifully complement Chirik’s world class synthetic efforts. The goal of the proposal is to expand the scope of these important iron catalyzed transformations using control of electronic structure as our guide. Specific new targets include rare examples of iron alkylidenes, imides and nitride compounds. Wieghardt’s extensive experience with iron nitride chemistry will also prove valuable for the collaboration.
