In recent years the relevance of simulation in production has grown. The vision of the multiscale simulation promises competitive advantages for production planning as well as product development. These advantages are possible through reduction of complex experimental analyses to determine process parameters and through significant reduction of product development time.
Strategies to simulate single manufacturing processes are established and successfully implemented. However, two important development steps have to take place, before simulation-based product development can fully become reality: For the particular simulation steps an appropriate interface has to be generated in order to allow reliable simulation of the complete process chain. The primary result of simulation, the condition of the work piece, has to transferred into a reliably prognosis of the work piece performance under operating conditions.
The basic idea of the Research Training Group is to develop simulation methods to describe, evaluate and optimise work piece conditions in connected manufacturing processes. Additionally experimental analyses are conducted for reasons of verification. The work is focussed on those process chains, which start with semi-finished products and lead to the final work piece.
Fundamental engineering improvements with high relevance to implementation are expected by combination of manufacturing process modelling and material modelling as well as experimental process analyses and micro structural and mechanical work piece characterisation.
Process chains that lead from semi-finished products to the final work piece are modelled in experimental setups for all relevant process steps. Parallel to that the particular simulation chain is generated to compare experiment and simulation. The Research Training Group is divided into three subject areas: A. process chains in manufacturing of sheet metal parts, B. combinations of different manufacturing processes for massive parts and C. simulation techniques for process chains.
