Organic metal halide (OMH) perovskites are very promising candidates for highly responsive and sensitive near infrared photodetectors that can be processed fully from solution. Yet, the influence of temperature dependent crystalline phase transitions and ionic mobility that by all means are expected to affect charge carrier recombination and temporal dynamics is still relatively unknown for perovskite photodetectors. Thus, the applicant aims at the development of a fundamental understanding of these phenomena for FA(X)MA(1−X)PbI3-based photodetectors, particularly in the temperature range that is relevant for device operation. The project is divided into three main objectives: (i) The applicant will establish a perovskite photodetector fabrication route in the new lab environment at Swansea University based on preliminary work on perovskite solar cells. (ii) As soon as this process yields reproducible devices, the extensive characterization infrastructure of the Centre for Integrative Semiconductor Materials (CISM) will allow the investigation of temperature dependent recombination dynamics in perovskite photodetectors. (iii) Based on the experimental findings, the final objective is the development and verification of a comprehensive model for the correlation of OMH perovskite microstructure and trap-mediated recombination dynamics. Although this final objective is certainly ambitious, the combination of previous work of both the applicant and the group of Prof. Meredith warrants good chances of success.
