The Theory of the Lexicographical Process. The Role and Tasks of the professional Lexicographer

In modern lexicographic information systems the lexicographic process is more and more determined by the provision of computer generated data. In many cases, incorrect lexicographic data are produced, which considerably impairs the quality of the information system and is sometimes defective. In certain areas, it can be shown that a lot of data cannot be reliably provided without the expertise and competence of the professional lexicographer. In the project, based on a critical analysis of existing information systems, the computer-suitable tasks and the tasks and functions of the professional lexicographer are determined separately. This also involves interdependencies, i.e. human-machine interaction. The necessary competencies that a professional lexicographer has or must have in order to carry out the tasks have never been systematically investigated in metalexicography. The aim is to determine which competencies are involved and how they can be acquired. For this purpose, first of all, observation protocols concerning the work of a lexicographer will be drawn up, in order to subsequently accompany lexicographers during research stays in various large dictionary projects. Subsequently, a questionnaire will be designed with which the competencies of lexicographers will be recorded on a sample of about 40 persons. This will make an important contribution to the lexicographic process in the 21st century, so that qualitative improvements in lexicographic work and lexical information systems can be achieved. Furthermore, a contribution to the improved training of the lexicographer will be made.
