Microbial metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids and bile acids can modulate thermogenic responses in brown and white adipose tissue. The concentration of intestinal metabolites in the systemic circulation is determined by the gatekeeper function of the liver, which thereby controls energy expenditure in brown and beige adipocytes. The relevance of this organ crosstalk to adaptive thermogenesis and systemic energy metabolism will be investigated in the context of a humanized bile acid pool and T cell-mediated inflammation in the liver.
