The International Ocean Drilling Programme3 (IODP3) is an international scientific ocean drilling (SOD) program under the joint lead of the European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling (ECORD) and Japan launched in January 2025. It is the follow-up program of previous successful SOD programs: Deep Sea Drilling Program (DSDP, 1968-1983), Ocean Drilling Program (ODP, 1985-2003), Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP-1, 2003-2013) and International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP-2, 2013-2024), which continuously operated since 1968. IODP3 will be solely based on Mission Specific Platforms. This new mode offers a higher flexibility in drilling operations, expedition duration and science party size according to the scientific requirements and will not depend on the restrictions given by operating a permanent drilling vessel. Scientific objectives of IODP3 are summarized in the new 2050 Science Framework, which defines seven Strategic Objectives for targeted investigations: Habitability and Life on Earth, The Oceanic Life Cycle of Tectonic Plates, Earth's Climate System, Feedbacks in the Earth System, Tipping Points in Earth's History, Global Cycles of Energy and Matter, and Natural Hazards Impacting Society. The fulfilment of the 2050 Science Framework requires long-term, multidisciplinary research efforts with multiple expeditions combining several Strategic Objectives in Flagship Initiatives. Compared to former science plans, the new 2050 Science Framework has a higher societal relevance and is focused on processes in Earth System components and key interactions among them. Funds of the IODP3 SPP will include the realisation of high-impact research projects by German scientists related to the new and former SOD programs, as well as support for scientists in panel work, expedition participation and meetings. At the same time, the IODP3 SPP will continue to promote diversity and training of young geoscientists in SOD. The IODP3 Coordination Office will coordinate national initiatives and projects, will be in charge of the information flow within the scientific community and support German scientists in their travel activities and development of drilling initiatives. Finally, the IODP3 SPP will facilitate an intensification of the collaboration between IODP3 and the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) nationally and internationally.
