laser microdissection microscope

Subject Area Basic Research in Biology and Medicine
Term Funded in 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 503250411

The microscope and accessories requested are intended for use in the Proteomics, Transcriptomics, and Imaging Core Facilities at CECAD. Recent developments in next-generation sequencing (NGS) and mass spectrometry have enabled the unbiased analysis of samples from small amounts of tissue, single cells, and even isolated nuclei. To isolate specific cell populations, individual cells and their subcompartments in an automated, high-throughput manner, modern laser microdissection (LMD) systems have been combined with deep-learning and machine learning-based imaging analysis tools. The acquisition of a modern LMD microscope will therefore be a vital asset to the projects carried out by the research groups at the Cologne campus. Furthermore, due to the high number of samples required for proteomics and transcriptomics, it is important to integrate an automated and efficient cell classification system with high-resolution imaging. Platforms for NGS and sensitive mass spectrometers are well-established in Cologne and enable analysis of complex biological samples. Since the demand for quantitative analyses of individual cell populations has massively increased, a new LMD microscope will be essential to the realization of the planned research projects.
